Don’t over do it!

It may seem a bit late in the day to be suggesting you ’don’t over do it’ and I probably should have talked about this before Christmas but I thought it may just fall on deaf ears and what I really want to say here is ‘don’t over do the resolutions!’

This may seem a bit crazy coming from someone who wants you all to make healthy changes, but as good as new year resolutions are, if you make too many you are almost definitely destined for failure. Small improvements that you can sustain are far better than a load of good intentions that fall by the wayside before the month has even come to an end.

Creating a new healthy habit is not as difficult as you first think, you just need to give yourself time to adjust to the change, no matter how small it may be, before moving on to the next one. Trust me, you will feel so much better for it. Maybe aim to change something small each month, like drink more water and less tea/coffee, buy more organic food, reduce your gluten intake, find a suitable dairy alternative, eat less meat, aim to reduce alcohol to no more than 3 nights a week, re-invent your snacks for something more healthy, eat more fruit and veg, make more soup, reduce sugar intake, be a bit more ‘alternative!’ Oh no, now I’ve started I can’t stop!

So unless you are laden with willpower, which most of us are not, it’s not worth the heartache of going all guns blazing straight into an epic fail which will only make you feel miserable. We all have bad habits and need to work on changing them for some good ones but softly, softly does it. Once an old bad habit has firmly been changed into a good one you can move on to another small change and give yourself a well-deserved pat on the back!

Good luck.
