Are you a Healthy Flexitarian?

I was bought up on traditional British meat and two veg meals where meat was always centre stage on the plate, potatoes were a close second and vegetables, although important in their own right, were uninteresting and usually boiled to within an inch of their lives!

Thankfully things have changed for the better, eating is far more interesting nowadays with all the amazingly diverse foods from around the world, the different cooking methods and of course there’s just so much more variety….. of everything.

In our house vegetables often take centre stage these days and meat takes a firm back seat or at least pales into insignificance in a mostly vegetarian dish. I absolutely love vegetables and eat a lot of them, a lot of the time, but I am not a vegan or a vegetarian because I still enjoy meat and fish sometimes. I guess as this makes me pretty flexible in the culinary department, I can officially say I am a Flexitarian, how great to finally have a name for it!

With meat becoming more expensive and vegetables so much more appealing, maybe it’s time to make the change, Embracing flexitarianism will greatly improve your health, could even increase your wealth and will be far more exciting on your plate! You can have it all ways. Even hardened meat eaters can be converted with robust and tasty vegetarian meals and will find they don’t miss meat half as much as they thought they would (words from my own meat eating husband’s mouth!)

And as Hugh Fearnley Whittingstall says in his ‘River Cottage Veg Everyday’ cookbook ‘We need to eat more vegetables and less flesh, because vegetables are the foods that do us the most good and our planet the least harm.’

There’s a stack of delicious tried and tested vegetarian recipes on my website and plenty more to come! Go on liven up your meals with some veg!
