20 Apr 6 Reasons to LOVE Wild Garlic
One of my all time favourite things to do at this time of year is to go on a bluebell walk, where the forest floor is literally covered in a sea of beautiful flowers. I have a stunning photo of our local woods in full bluebell bloom hanging in my kitchen but to see the real thing is what really does it for me, especially as there’s always an added bonus at the end of the walk…. Wild Garlic.
The appearance of wild garlic is a sure sign that spring is here and If you are lucky enough to live near woodland where you can pick fresh wild garlic then you really should be getting out there and adding it to everything, it won’t be around for long!
Here’s why you shouldn’t be missing out
It is a Fantastic Base for a Pesto
Instead of the usual basil pesto, check out this super easy Wild Garlic Pesto recipe. It really is delicious, serve with pasta (see image) or on toast with chopped tomatoes (bruschetta) or with any spiralised veg.
You can eat the Leaves, Flowers and Bulbs.
The leaves are great chopped into salads, soups, stews and casseroles. The flowers make a beautiful addition to any salad and can be used as a really pretty edible garnish. The bulbs are small but are delicious too, use like regular garlic.
Wild Garlic is sooooo Good for You
Wild garlic contains the active ingredient Allicin, just like regular garlic, it is especially good for heart health, lowering cholesterol levels and blood pressure, it is believed to be more effective at lowering blood pressure than regular garlic and is much tastier than tablets!!
It is Anti Everything
Wild garlic is antibacterial, antimicrobial, antibiotic, antiseptic and antioxidant, in fact it is just about anti everything! Which basically means it is a mega powerful plant. It is however low odour so thankfully isn’t anti human!
And that’s not all…..
It contains magnesium, manganese, folic acid, Iron and sulphur plus it acts as a perfect probiotic for your guts, all in all it packs a pretty hefty nutritious punch
Last but not Least, it’s ABSOLUTELY FREE!
Not only is it free. It is in abundant at the moment and is around when there is little else growing in the garden, except nettles, which is another story entirely!
