29 Apr To all cereal lovers….
Sorry if you are a cereal lover, but OMG, I am speechless!
Did you see the news about Kellogg’s this week? They are trying to defend their sugary cereals against the British Government’s new ruling ensuring high sugar and salt cereals will no longer be allowed to be prominently displayed in shops, in order to help curb childhood obesity.
To say I am outraged is an understatement! They know full well their products contain way too much sugar, they absolutely know they are contributing to the global obesity epidemic, and they also know that their clever marketing tricks are cajoling consumers to buy their unhealthy processed products for their children – and themselves.
I honestly don’t know where to start – there’s the gimmicks, the bright packaging, the fun characters, the pester point at which they are displayed, the fortifying with vitamins and minerals to make them appear ‘healthy’ – the list goes on.
Their argument is, that by adding milk or yoghurt to the cereal, which they suggest most people do, it reduces the overall sugar content of the serving, and therefore it is nowhere near as bad, however, the sugar remains the same, all they are doing is playing with numbers, it takes nothing away from their unhealthy products at all.
In my book #FeedingGoodHabits breakfast cereals come up a lot – they are not my favourite! One thing I struggle with the most is how people expect these sugary, salty, highly processed products to sustain us, and our children, throughout the day. I believe the way you start your day is a huge factor in how it plays out, start with sugar and you will be craving it all day long.
So my advice to you is to find a healthy breakfast alternative, like porridge, overnight oats, low sugar granola, yoghurt, eggs or omelette – you could/should include a couple of your 10 a day too – win-win. It’s time to make a stand against profit-making, fat-creating companies like Kellogg’s and take a better stance for your health and wellbeing.
Simples!
