Pimp your Meals!

I decided recently that I should start to pimp my meals with some easy to use but amazing superfoods to make sure all my meals pack an extra nutritional punch. Winter is fast approaching so we all need a bit more resistance and stamina to stay fit and healthy.

There are so many easy ways to pimp your meals, so lets start with breakfast. Throw some blue/purple fruits, like blueberries, on your porridge or muesli (yes even on your cornflakes is fine!) they have powerful antioxidant properties and are naturally anti-inflammatory too. Add a sprinkle or two of cinnamon and you are well on your way. Cinnamon can stimulate your metabolism and is said to be anti diabetic, anti cancer and can help lower high blood pressure.

Mexican scrambled eggs are a great way to pimp your breakfast, fresh chilli and coriander leaves are both amazing superfoods, chilli is stimulating for the circulation and digestion and helps to reduce gas and bloating, research also shows it to be an anti-cancer food. Coriander leaf is used as an anti-diabetic herb and is believed to protect the liver and improve memory.

Broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower and in particular brussel sprouts from the cruciferous vegetable family contain enzymes that help your liver detox, they also can help to prevent cancer, eaten daily you will feel ‘on top of the world!’ Steamed or stir fried with garlic and chilli they make a great side or add to a smoothie or soup.

Leafy green vegetables, especially raw kale, are loaded with the perfect nutrients for your eyes amongst many other things. Make a green smoothie each morning with some green leaves and you will literally be raring to go. Also a little known piece of information, calcium from kale is more easily absorbed by the body than from milk, who would have thought it!

Add garlic to everything, it is a wonder food with so many benefits it’s untrue, it is anti-parasitic, anti-bacterial, cholesterol lowering, blood pressure lowering, anti-cancer and lots more, try to add it towards the end of cooking so you don’t cook away all of the goodness or better still cut up a garlic clove into small cubes before bed and swallow down with a glass of water.

Ginger is the next one, I make a mean egg fried rice, stir fried veg or anything leftover in the fridge with some chopped fresh ginger, garlic, chilli and coriander, it is delicious and totally pimped! Ginger has anti-inflammatory and anti-cancer properties, it can stimulate circulation and digestion, relieve nausea and muscle pain, what more can you ask from this knobbly root?

Turmeric is the last main one, this is mind blowing good for you, it is another anti-cancer spice but is also said to halt the growth and spread of cancer, wow. It is a hugely powerful antioxidant, can do wonders for your liver and is anti-inflammatory too. Add some where you can, it is great in curries, lentil soup or you can even get it in supplement form if you feel the need.

Some additional superfoods are beetroot, celery, radishes, soy, brazil nuts, mint, parsley, pumpkin seeds, tomatoes etc. etc.

Go on give your food an added boost!
