10 Nov 5 Reasons to Eat More Watermelon
The other day I picked up a watermelon for the first time in ages, it shows the weather is improving, watermelon definitely signifies a hot summers day to me and we have been enjoying some really warm spring days recently so it seemed apt, besides, my boys love it and so do I!
I always knew that watermelon was good but I had no idea quite how good until I did a bit more digging, I was pretty surprised about a few things.
WATERMELON IS MADE UP OF ABOUT 91% WATER
so is absolutely perfect for hydrating on a hot day. It also contains about 6% sugar, depending on how ripe it is, so is a great all natural, extremely healthy sweet treat for when you need that little something!
WATERMELON CONTAINS MORE VITAMIN C THAN ORANGES
(although still not quite as much as kiwi fruit!) Vitamin C is a mega antioxidant, help boosts your immune system and works as a natural anti-histamine, perfect for hay fever sufferers.
YOU CAN EAT THE SKIN AND PIPS AS WELL AS THE RIND!
It may not be as tasty as the inside but it is full of nutrients and is fab in a smoothie or even cooked as a vegetable. This works perfectly with my ‘Waste not Want not’ ethos.
WATERMELON CONTAINS BAGS OF LYCOPENE
Just like tomatoes. This important antioxidant is great for your cardiovascular health and eyes, especially age related issues. It also acts as a natural sunscreen and keeps your skin young, which sounds perfect to me!
AND THERE’S MORE….
And if that isn’t quite enough, it also contains Magnesium, Potassium, Vitamin A and Vitamin B6 (which is especially good for women’s hormonal health.)
I think that is a pretty impressive list considering it’s mostly made up of water!
And it is delicious too, what’s not to like?!
