11 Nov 2 Great Reasons to Eat More Fruit & Veg!
There are many, many reasons why we should eat a rainbow of fresh fruit and vegetables every day, but these two are right up there on the list – Free Radicals and Antioxidants.
These two words are banded around a lot and whilst I’m sure most people have a bit of knowledge about both of them, do you truly understand what they are and what they actually do?
Here’s the science bit, in brief….. Free radicals are molecules, derived from oxygen that contain unpaired electrons. These unpaired electrons stabilize themselves by stealing similar unpaired electrons from other molecules, oxidizing them and turning them into new free radicals. Once this chain reaction starts and gets hold it can lead to cell damage and then on to all number of degenerative diseases, not good!
Entrance stage left, Antioxidants, ready to counteract the evil free radicals.

It is believed that almost every disease in the body is caused by cell damage from free radicals so to prevent this from happening we need to first keep our free radical levels down and secondly keep our antioxidant levels up. But how? I hear you ask……
……. Free radicals are a by-product of many of the body’s natural processes, every day of your life, you face exposure to their dangers, this is simply a fact of life, but they are hugely increased by smoking, drinking, pollution, stress, UV exposure, infection, excessive physical exercise and poor nutrition.
So if you have more bad habits than good, you need to think about balancing the scale. Antioxidants are in abundance in many foods but especially in colourful fresh fruit and vegetables, so the more you eat, the higher your antioxidant levels will be, thus fighting the free radicals and ultimately keeping you healthy!
There are a hundred ways to incorporate more into your diet, from smoothies to soups, pimping your breakfasts, lunches and dinners to swapping unhealthy snacks for fruit and veg based ones.
It’s that simple! What’s stopping you
