20 May What I think of the food industry!
You may recall the other day Boris Johnson had a revelation about his weight and general health, after contracting Covid 19 and spending time in intensive care.
It is strange how a brush with death can change your trajectory on matters that you know deep down are really important but somehow get swept under the carpet for much longer than they should be.
Reintroduce 5 a day campaign
I wrote about this in an earlier blog, suggesting it is the perfect time to re launch the ‘5 a day’ campaign* and really look at the health and immunity of the nation. Jamie Oliver fought for a sugar tax to be added onto sugary drinks but how much difference has that really made? Don’t get me wrong, it was an incredibly good fight, and outcome, but it was a drop in the ocean really.
As bad as war criminals
I have been saying for years that the food industry should be treated like war criminals. That may sound harsh, but seriously, the crap they make, with an array of inferior and grossly unhealthy ingredients, lavish packaging, with outlandish health claims, on top of superbly clever marketing campaigns to hit us exactly where it hurts and make us believe that their product will fill an empty hole in our lives. It is no better than emotional blackmail and we fall for it every time. The proof is in the pudding, excuse the pun!
It’s not all our fault
We are certainly not all to blame, sugar is more addictive than cocaine and they know that, which is why they find the cheapest version they can get hold of (such as high fructose corn syrup) and then add it to everything, even things like pasta sauce. I make a beautiful pasta sauce at home, fresh garlic, tomatoes, herbs and seasoning, but never sugar!
Covid 19 may not be pleasant but it has undoubtedly given the majority of us the opportunity to stop and think about our health and wellbeing, emotionally, spiritually and physically and that is not a bad thing at all.
Many more people are cooking from scratch, which is heart warming, the sales of vitamin and minerals has gone up massively and sports gear are some of the products sold out on many sites.
We now have the time to look after ourselves properly, but Boris does need to move too, and quickly. We can’t go on like this. We don’t just need the promotion of healthy food, although that is a great place to start. We also need a greater education about the other stuff, more deterrents, more taxes, more control and less crap in general being allowed through the system, and then just maybe the health of the nation can be saved.
I stand by my belief that a strong immune system is absolutely the first line of defence against any illness, including Covid19. The antioxidants in fresh fruit and veg are the secret to a long and healthy life, junk food offers the polar opposite.
* 5 a day should really be 10 a day. The health benefits of increasing antioxidant rich fruit and veg intake is immeasurable!
